Website and forum rework
« on: September 14, 2013, 03:46:20 pm »

Hi everyone.

It looks like the time has finally come for some fresh color around this place. We have been using the same old website and the same forum software for a long time now, and we now have everything in place so that we can update both!

Wareya has been working on a new website design for a while now, which you can find here. We are still working out some creases, so please take a look and suggest improvements!

He also made a GG2 theme for Simple Machines Forum 2, which means we can now upgrade our forum software to the current version without losing our style (but adding some nice touches!). The upgrade will be performed soon, but to do it we need to take the forums offline for ca. an hour so that nobody can post anything while we copy and convert the database and update the software.

We are not quite sure yet when this will happen - but if everything works smoothly and you give us a positive response, it might be as soon as tomorrow. So stay tuned!

here's the direct link

font's a bit off.. something pixelated would fit the logo a bit more, like the original site.

also I'd prefer a little more space between the GG2 text in the image and the tabbed menu.

See http://www.ganggarrison.com/forums/index.php?topic=33751.150 for the discussion thread, since its kinda buried in Medo's post.

Agree with ilegend and also posted my comments in the other thread
*raises hand*
- Agree with ilegend, please use pixelated font from old homepage on titles. Body text is nice as is.
- Light grey boxes look weird as killercrusher said, something like this would be less distracting http://i.imgur.com/pF1QYh7.png
- The double navigation bars are really weird, especially since you can only access the bottom bar from Home. It would be nice to consolidate them into one bar.
- Banner should be clickable and lead to Home>>Main. Also why does the lowercase "g" in Gang on the banner hang over the navbar?
- The News page could probably be incorporated under the Downloads page since its mostly update links. Unless we want to announce clan wars/pugs and stuff there.
- Putting a screenshot or other graphic on the main page would make it look less plain.
- The About page would probably look less wall-of-text-ish if we alternated paragraph-left/image-right and image-left/paragraph-right. I like the screenshots though.
- Don't really want to discuss the readme since its kinda long, but graphics would be nice.
- A Screenshots page, separate or just underneath the About stuff, maybe with gifs, would be nice especially for people actually browsing the site for more info.

- Can we agree on an inclusive "decent map list" and put it on Downloads? Visitors are likely to go to the site rather than forums looking for custom maps and all they'll find is the classic map pack.
- Is it possible to have the pages do that smooth transition you currently get with the arrows rather than reloading everything for each page?
- Can we clean up the oldversions and lobbystatus pages and link them somewhere? They're useful and hard to find.

We added karma again on a whim. It's an official SMF feature now. Funny enough, they use the same database column for it as the old Mod, so the old Karma values now show up again :P

If you complain loudly enough we'll remove it again.

In other news, if you find anything doesn't work now, please report it so that we can fix.
