Yes, that's right - it's been
10 years now since we first released Gang Garrison 2 for the Bootleg Demakes competition!
The actual release date is a bit tricky to pin down - while
the first demo was released on August 25, I'd rather count the
September 7 version which was the actual entrant to the competition. Upon releasing it, I proudly announced: "The game is FINISHED!" Boy, had I known what was coming... However, the version that really introduced GG2 to the world was the "Lobbyfix", released on September 10, exactly 10 years ago today. This was the first version that
went viral on /v/ (thanks to gnat for preserving this historic moment), and it gathered an incredible amount of attention and activity overnight.
Did you know that by now, Team Fortress 2 is only ~10% older than Gang Garrison 2? It's true! Also, Gang Garrison 2 is now over half as old as Half-Life. Are you feeling old yet?
I would like to thank you all for being such a devoted community and for still sticking around after all this time. When we started out, I never expected anything even close to this. I thought the game would last for two weeks after the competition, but now, a full
decade later, people are still
playing this game every day, and if you open it at any time of day you're more likely than not to find someone online. And on the development side, while we're not working on it full steam, there is a steady rhythm of activity and a big release every year, thanks to all your great contributions - be it maps, sprites, code or any of the other things that have gone into the game over the years.
Who knows where we'll go in the years to come? While it's true that the game doesn't have as many players as it used to, it's still enourmously popular in the space of free online games. And who knows what fun and interesting projects may keep springing up around it? I'm looking forward to see what we'll do.
